Description: This fantastically illustrated e book is a celebration of the vanishing vernacular structure of Dominica. These small picket properties, ingeniously crafted and punctiliously tailored to their setting, have withstood hurricanes and earthquakes since their emergence within the post-emancipation interval. Whereas many trendy, concrete properties have been destroyed, they’re “nonetheless standing’. Even so, they’re beneath menace from the forces of ‘modernity’ and ‘growth’.

With an introduction by anthropologist Adom Philogene Heron that explains the historic evolution and significance of the ti kai, Nonetheless Standing takes us on a visible journey into the ti kai of at present. Every house, photographed by Marica Honychurch is a tribute to conventional constructing expertise and design; each, described by its occupant, has a person story of survival and well-being. Nonetheless Standing doesn’t want to paint the ti kai ‘as some quaint relic of an island’s previous, however, as each dwelling, ever evolving examples of creole heritage and as a mannequin of “resilient” and sustainable dwelling.’ We consider that the tales and pictures on this e book present highly effective proof for vernacular conservation and thus encourage new respect for Dominica’s historical past and tradition.
