The Philadelphia 76ers‘ young talent, Tyrese Maxey, is held in incredibly high esteem, but there is a paradox.
On the one hand, his suicidal basketball style is celebrated while, on the other, he is condemned for being reckless. If Tyrese Maxey were to moderate his approach, he would lose exactly what makes him different.
The point guard will soon be eligible for a contract extension, which could range from 20 to 35 million dollars per year over five seasons.
Those are high figures, but ones that would guarantee he stays with the team.
Does Tyrese Maxey deserve a contract extension?
Maxey is a technical player of extremely high energy and talent. He has also established himself over the last two years as a reliable shooter from the perimeter: 42.7 percent in 2021/22 and 43.4 percent in 2022/23.
James Harden‘s inconsistency, a Joel Embiid who wasn’t at 100 percent and the struggles of the veterans meant that Maxey also had to lead the team in the playoffs.
After 11 games in the playoffs Maxey was the player who shot and scored the most points, the player with the best three-point percentage and the second-highest scorer on the team at 20.5 points per game.
Against Boston in the conference semi-finals, Maxey averaged 20.3 points on 40.2 percent from the field, 34.7 percent from three and 93.8 percent from the free throw line.
He also added five rebounds and 2.3 assists in 38.8 minutes on average.
While he wasn’t at his most consistent, his best performance came in Game 5 at TD Garden. He scored 30 points, with a sublime 6-12 from three-point range. Along with Embiid, Maxey led his team to put the series at 3-2.
The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to bounce back
Ultimately, that wasn’t enough and the 76ers were eliminated in seven.
With the 76ers, it feels like every playoff elimination always has an asterisk that justifies the loss.
While each event has its own particular context, with Philadelphia this tends to be used more as an excuse than an explanation for what happened.
Since December, rumours have swirled that Harden is headed to the Houston Rockets. What’s next for the Sixers? What are the keys to their future? They need their young star more than ever: Tyrese Maxey.
