THE PUBLIC THEATER EXTENDS POWERFUL WORLD PREMIERE PLAY CULLUD WATTAH THROUGH SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12 – Sugarcane Journal ™

Public Theater (Creative Director, Oskar Eustis; Govt Director, Patrick Willingham) introduced a one-week extension of the world premiere play CULLUD WATTAH via Sunday, December 12. Written by Susan Smith Blackburn Prize winner Erika Dickerson-Despenzaand directed by Lilly Award winner Candis C. Jones, CULLUD WATTAH follows three generations of Black girls residing via the Flint Water Disaster. The world premiere started preview performances in The Public’s Martinson Corridor on Tuesday, November 2 and formally opens on Wednesday, November 17.

The Public has launched a brand-new video that includes playwright Erika Dickerson-Despenza and director Candis C. Jones in dialog about their historical past of collaboration, the themes of the play, and the way water justice impacts Flint and past. 2021 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize winner Erika Dickerson-Despenza’s new Afro-surrealist play premieres at The Public about three generations of Black girls residing via the present water disaster in Flint, Michigan. It’s been 936 days since Flint has had clear water. Marion, a third-generation Normal Motors worker, is consumed by layoffs on the engine plant. When her sister, Ainee, seeks justice and restitution for lead poisoning, her plan reveals the poisonous entanglements between town and its strongest business, forcing their household to confront the past-present-future value of survival. As lead seeps into their house and their our bodies, corrosive reminiscences and secrets and techniques rise amongst them. Will this household ever be capable of filter out the reality? Directed by Lilly Award winner Candis C. Jones, CULLUD WATTAH blends type and bends time, diving deep into the toxic selections of the skin world, the contamination inside, and the way we make the perfect selections for our households’ futures when there are not any actual, current choices.
