The Inaugural Letras Boricuas Fellowship – •

[Many thanks to Maritza Stanchich for bringing this item to our attention.] Twenty Puerto Rican writers, together with poets Martín Espada (Nationwide E-book Awards finalist) and María Teresa Fernández Rosario (AKA Mariposa) obtained the inaugural Letras Boricuas Fellowship. The Letras Boricuas Fellowship, created by The Andrew W. Mellon Basis and the Flamboyán Basis’s Arts Fund, goals to complement and maintain literary custom in Puerto Rico and throughout the US diaspora.

The Andrew W. Mellon Basis and the Flamboyan Basis’s Arts Fund right now introduced the inaugural cohort of Letras Boricuas Fellows – 20 Puerto Rican writers whose dynamic work spans genres together with fiction, poetry, inventive nonfiction, and youngsters’s literature. A primary-of-its-kind fellowship, Letras Boricuas was created to determine, elevate, and amplify the voices of rising and established Puerto Rican writers on the island and throughout the US diaspora.

The fellowship offers essential help each throughout the diaspora, and to the neighborhood of writers in Puerto Rico who’ve endured and proceed their observe by way of repeated pure disasters and ongoing political turmoil, regardless of traditionally restricted alternatives to share their work with a broader viewers. By offering unrestricted funds and fostering connection amongst its recipients, the fellowship will help Puerto Rico’s celebrated literary lineage — a self-discipline historically under-resourced and underfunded each in Puerto Rico and in the US — illustrate the range of those writers’ experiences and showcase unbelievable Puerto Rican literary voices.

The 2021 Letras Boricuas fellows have been chosen by a committee of acclaimed Puerto Rican writers based mostly on the archipelago and in the US, together with Mayra Santos Febres (Puerto Rico-based), Eduardo Lalo (Puerto Rico-based), Félix Joaquín Rivera (Puerto Rico-based), Carina Del Valle Schorske (US-based), Willie Perdomo (US-based), and Aracelis Girmay (US-based).
