JOHANNESBURG – At FW de Klerk’s state memorial service, attendees have heard the liberty we all know right this moment wouldn’t be doable if not for the contribution of people like apartheid’s final president.

The sentiment has been shared on the historic Groote Kerk in Cape City on Sunday.

Among the many dignitaries was President Cyril Ramaphosa who delivered the eulogy.

A personal mass and the nationwide anthem preceded the ceremony, which featured a portrait of FW de Klerk between two candles.

In his tribute to De Klerk, Ramaphosa reiterated he went in opposition to many hard-line Afrikaners: “We neither ignore nor should we search to dismiss the anger and the ache and the frustration of those that recall the place FW de Klerk occupied within the hierarchy of an oppressive state.”

The president additionally handed over a South African flag to De Klerk’s widow, Elita.

She stated her late husband was usually misunderstood: “We had been as soon as watching Walter Sisulu’s funeral on TV and I keep in mind him being very distraught and saying to me, ‘what have we executed?’.”

De kKerk died final month on the age of 85 following a battle with most cancers.

4 days of nationwide mourning had been declared in his honour.
