Davante Adams’ contract details, salary cap impact, and bonuses

After negotiating on a new contract throughout the NFL offseason, Davante Adams and the Green Bay Packers have broken off negotiations. What is the situation with Adams’ current contract, and what level of salary could the star wide receiver be looking to command on a new deal?

Davante Adams’ contract details and bonuses

In 2017, Adams signed a four-year contract extension as he neared his rookie contract’s final season. The extension was worth $58 million across the four years. The contract contained an $18 million signing bonus and $24 million fully guaranteed at signing. While the reporting on the full guarantees varies, it was between $24 and $31 million. Nevertheless, those guarantees finished after the 2019 season.

Adams has one year remaining on his contract

The reason that the recent news regarding Adams is significant is that this is the final year of his current contract. Adams is set to become a free agent in 2022 unless a new deal is agreed upon. The Packers do have the option to franchise tag Adams for the 2022 season.

What impact does Adams’ deal have on the Packers’ salary cap?

Adams is due to count $16.8 million against the Packers’ salary cap in 2021. He will earn $12.25 million in base salary, is due a $411,765 roster bonus, and a further $500,000 workout bonus. He also has a cap hit of $3.6 million in a prorated signing bonus.

How much is Adams looking to earn with his new contract?

Entering training camp, the situation with Adams is tricky. Realistically, he should be in line to become the highest-paid wide receiver in the entire league. However, with the situation between the Packers and Aaron Rodgers in a bad position, things are tough for both Adams and Green Bay.

The Packers likely do not want to commit a huge number to Adams if they do not have Rodgers for the future. Equally, Adams may not be willing to face a rebuild under a new QB if he is not extremely well compensated. Finding that balance will be tough. Let’s take a look at some comparable contracts Adams could be looking at.

Comparable contracts and salaries for Davante Adams

Adams is realistically looking at a comparable contract to the very best receivers in the league. At $27.25 million per year, DeAndre Hopkins leads the list. He is followed by Julio Jones ($22 million), Keenan Allen ($20.025 million), and Amari Cooper ($20 million).

While Adams is unlikely to top out above Hopkins, he has a good chance to be somewhere between him and Jones. That would place Adams in the region of a contract worth $25 million per year over a four or five-year period. Four years would be the most likely, meaning Adams is looking at a total contract value of around $100 million. With the situation in Green Bay is as uncertain as it currently is, committing that much to a wide receiver is tough to do.
