An Artist Challenge by Miguel Luciano – •
This unique “El Met” cap is a part of an artist venture by Miguel Luciano, Civic Apply Partnership Artist in Residence at The Met, designed to develop the visibility of Latinx artwork on the establishment. All proceeds from the sale of “El Met” merchandise will assist the acquisition of Latinx artwork on the Museum.
“El Met” is how we are saying “The Met” in Spanglish. It’s how Latinx audiences all through New York Metropolis and past colloquially describe the Museum as a vacation spot.
As a Civic Apply Partnership Artist in Residence, one of many first issues I explored was the historical past of illustration amongst Puerto Rican and Latinx artists on the Museum, asking the basic query: The place will we see ourselves at The Met? The groundbreaking exhibition The Artwork Heritage of Puerto Rico: Pre-Columbian to Current (1973), a collaboration with El Museo del Barrio, turned a focus in my analysis, because it stays the biggest survey of Puerto Rican artwork in any U.S. museum thus far. Sadly, it didn’t result in main acquisitions, future exhibition alternatives, or sustainable relationships with Latinx communities within the generations that adopted.
In response to the underrepresentation of Puerto Rican and Latinx artists within the assortment, I remixed The Met’s brand into “El Met” as a method of reimagining the Museum via the lens of Spanish-speaking audiences. I then created a restricted version of “El Met” t-shirts as a provocation to extend the visibility of Latinx artwork on the Museum. This assortment is now solely out there at The Met, and all proceeds from the sale of “El Met” merchandise will immediately assist the acquisition of Latinx artwork on the Museum.
The “El Met” t-shirt is an artist venture that I hope can function a immediate for the establishment and its benefactors to speculate extra considerably within the artwork and tradition of Latinx communities, and in addition a method for Latinx audiences to rejoice our personal connections to the Museum.
